About Achilles Tendinitis

Achilles tendinitis is an overuse injury of the Achilles tendon, the band of tissue that connects calf muscles at the back of the lower leg to your heel bone. It causes pain along the back of the leg, normally near the heel.

Achilles Tendinitis commonly occurs in runners, middle aged people who play sports, such as tennis or basketball. The repetitive stress to the tendon is the problem. Achilles tendinitis can weaken the tendon, making it vulnerable to a tear which is a painful injury that usually requires surgical repair.

The main form of treatment for Achilles Tendinitis is usually physical therapy with some mild exercising and stretching to be completed at home as well. Ankle & Foot Centers of America normally prescribe orthotics, shoe inserts that help maintain support for your feet and help with the Achilles Tendinitis.

Other Tips That Help with Achilles Tendinitis

Rest – Always reduce or stop the activities that make the pain worse. Biking and swimming are low-impact activities that help you stay active while putting less stress the Achilles tendon.

Compression – Compression wraps can be used to reduce swelling and movement to the tendon.

Ice – Put ice on the most painful areas to reduce pain. This can be done multiple times a day up to 20 minute at a time.

Anti-Inflammatory Medication – Ibuprofen and naproxen reduce pain and swelling but do not fix the problem. Always discuss changes with your doctor.

Prevention is not always possible but these are some risk reducing steps:

Stretching – Stretch each day before and after exercise, this helps your body maintain flexibility.

Shoes – Make sure you choose shoes that support your foot and ankle.

Increase Activity gradually – Start exercise programs slowly and gradually, increase duration and intensity slowly.

Cross- train – Alternate high impact activities with low impact activities to reduce stress when exercising.

I've posted a review a few times and can't seem to find them! Dr. Monaco is by far the best podiatrist there is! I had been seeing another podiatrist in Columbus, who'd done 3 surgeries, all 3 messing my foot up worse, with the 3rd one leaving my first and second toes in the shape of a peace sign! I was constantly told by the previous podiatrist that everything was fine and lined up the way it was supposed to be. I had my first surgery with Dr. Monaco in August and it was the best decision I've made! She is by far the best! Truly compassionate about what she does! Very knowledgeable! Truly cares about her patients! If you're in need of a podiatrist give Dr. Monaco q call! ❤️

I was very impressed with Dr. Monaco this was my first visit. All the office staff was so nice as well as my nurse. I had came to Dr Monaco after being very unhappy with the prior Dr I had seen for my ankle injury. Dr. Monaco was very through with her exam and I think I finally got a good idea of what my issue is. Although I do need some further imaging test. Overall I am so glad I decided to see her, I didn't feel rushed at all and she answered all my questions. I'm sure I will have several more visits with her and overall I am well pleased. I highly recommend her to anyone who's having any foot or ankle issues.
